AVID — Advancement Via Individual Determination

Keeping Doors Open.

At Fort Bragg High School, AVID is built on one powerful idea: every student deserves the time, guidance, and support to figure out what their life looks like after high school — and to be prepared for it.

What Is AVID?

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a classroom-based college-readiness program designed to help students develop the academic skills, habits, and mindset they need to succeed after high school — whether that means a four-year university, community college, trade school, or entering the workforce.

AVID's mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success. It is driven by California's A-to-G course requirements, which are the foundation for keeping future options open.

At FBHS, AVID is about more than college prep. It's about making sure no door closes before you've had the chance to decide if you want to walk through it.

Who Is AVID For?

AVID is designed for students who are in the academic middle — those who have potential and ambition but may need additional support and structure to reach their goals. Many AVID students are:

  • First-generation college-goers
  • Students motivated to attend college but who need guidance navigating the path
  • Students capable of completing rigorous coursework with support
  • Students who want to develop stronger study skills and academic habits

You don't have to have everything figured out. AVID meets you where you are.

Why AVID Matters

Fort Bragg is a community where many students will be the first in their family to attend college. AVID exists to support those students — and any student who wants more for their future — by giving them the tools to compete on an equal footing.

AVID doesn't just prepare students for college applications. It prepares them for what comes after: navigating a new environment, advocating for themselves, managing their time, and succeeding in whatever they pursue.

What Does AVID Look Like at FBHS?

AVID at Fort Bragg High School is a year-long elective class that runs all four years of high school. Students who join AVID commit to the program and grow with it — building skills, relationships, and a clearer sense of direction over time.

Inside the AVID elective, students work on:

  • WICR strategies — Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, and Reading skills used across all subjects
  • Cornell Notes — A structured note-taking method that builds comprehension and study habits
  • Tutorials — Collaborative study sessions where students work through challenging content with guidance
  • College and career exploration — Visits, speakers, research, and planning tools to help students explore their options
  • Organization and time management — Building the day-to-day habits that lead to academic success
  • A-to-G coursework — AVID students are supported and encouraged to complete the courses required for four-year college eligibility
