The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) De-mystified

The U.S. Department of Education uses the FAFSA to determine eligibility for federal student aid, including low-cost loans, grants, and work-study. The FAFSA may also determine eligibility for state and school aid, AND for many SCHOLARSHIPS.

In other words, if you're planning to attend a 4-year College, Community/Junior College, or Trade School, OR maybe you just want to keep those doors open -  YOU MUST COMPLETE THE FAFSA!

 

Ready? Set? GO! Step by step:

  1.  FIRST - Both Students & Parents/Guardians must create an account username & password called a FSA ID.

Financial Aid Information

4 BASIC TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID PROGRAMS 

  • GRANTS:  Providing funds now, but with no future repayment obligation.

  • LOANS:  Providing funds now, but with a future repayment obligation.

  • SCHOLARSHIPS:  Gift assistance with no obligation for work or repayment

  • WORK-STUDY:  Student is offered part-time work while attending the institution

 

FAFSA Federal Student Aid Estimator
The Federal Student Aid Estimator provides an estimate of how much federal student aid the student may be eligible to receive. These estimates are based on the Student Aid Index (SAI), an index number used to determine federal student aid eligibility.
